Dark-Roasted Coffee Contains Stomach-Friendly Ingredient

August 23rd, 2010 by Jenn

At the 239th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, a group of scientists reported to find that N-methylpyridium (NMP), a coffee componant, seems to block the ability of the stomach cells to produce hydrochloric acid and could provide a way to reduce or avoid stomach irritation. “Since NMP is generated only upon roasting and not found in raw coffee beans, darker-roasted coffees contain higher amounts of this stomach-friendly coffee ingredient. Dark- roasted coffee can potentially contain up to twice as much of the ingredient as light-roasted coffees.”  Click here to read more.

The People of Haiti Need our Help

January 13th, 2010 by Jenn

Haiti, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, has been struck by an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale. This occured last Tuesday at 4:53 p.m. and was centered 10 miles south west of Port-au-Prince. According to the USGS, the earthquake took place about 6 miles underground and lasted 35 to 45 seconds and at least 10 aftershocks followed, including two in the magnitude 5 range.

It has been called the strongest earthquake since 1770 in what is now Haiti. The Red Cross estimated that the powerful earthquake has destroyed most of the capital city of Port-au-Prince and about 3 million people were affected by the quake. The devastation was so complete that it seemed likely the death toll from Tuesday afternoon’s magnitude-7.0 quake would run into the thousands.

The disaster is the latest to befall the country of about 9 million people, roughly the size of Maryland. It is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and among the poorest in the world. According to the CIA World Factbook, eighty percent of Haiti’s population lives under the poverty line. The average Haitian earns less than $2 per day, and more than half of its 9 million people are unemployed. After years of political instability the country has no real construction standards. In November 2008, the mayor of Port-au-Prince, estimated that about 60 percent of buildings were shoddily built and unsafe in normal circumstances.

WAYS TO HELP!

The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $1million to assist communities impacted by this earthquake, and is prepared to take further action as local responders assess the situation. As with most earthquakes, we expect to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

You can help the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need.

If you wish to designate your donation please do so by mailing your donation with the designation to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or to your local American Red Cross chapter.

Donations to the International Response Fund can be made by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or online at www.redcross.org

The Red Cross is also receiving money through a third party mobile fundraising effort sponsored by Mobile Accord. You can text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti.

Additionally, each Mayorga Coffee location will have a jar for our customers to leave donations, which will be designated to the Red Cross’ Haiti relief efforts.  Mayorga will match all donations made at our stores .

December 30th, 2009 by Jenn

Rockville, MD — Mayorga Coffee is proud to announce the opening of a new location at 314 Carroll Street, NW in Washington, DC. The 1,200 square foot location is scheduled to open on January 25th. The location will offer Mayorga’s signature coffee beverages, fresh baked pastries, and whole bean coffee roasted by Mayorga at their Rockville, MD roasting facility.

“Takoma Park residents went out of their way for years to support us in Silver Spring and we feel very fortunate to be able to become part of their community, which shares so many of our company’s values,” states Martin Mayorga, President of Mayorga Coffee. “This location is the perfect size and has great customer accessibility, which will allow us to focus on the fundamentals that have built this company” he added.

The building, called Elevation 314, is a state-of-the-art building that combines the highest standards of sustainable construction with beauty, comfort and convenience. Completed in 2004, the property was at the forefront of the green-building curve, incorporating environmentally friendly features that include a geothermal heating and cooling system and the first “green roof” stormwater management system in DC. Located immediately opposite the Takoma Metro Station, Elevation 314 is now home to more than 80 residential tenants and two retail businesses.

“We are excited to be a proud member of the Takoma Park community, offering residents and visitors the great tasting coffee that we are known for,” states Jennifer Rogers, Director of Retail Operations for Mayorga Coffee. “This new location will provide the community with a warm, relaxing environment, expertly pulled espresso shots in our signature beverages, French-pressed coffee and insight into our commitment to sustainability and positive business practices.
