Mayorga Coffee to Close Silver Spring Location; New Stores Opening Soon
SILVER SPRING, MD – Mayorga Coffee announced today that on December 31, 2009 it will be closing its Silver Spring location. Since 2003, the Mayorga Coffee Factory has served the residents of South Silver Spring more than just great coffee and pastries. It has been a community gathering place, a venue for aspiring musicians, and a convenient spot for private events. It has likewise proven that locally owned and operated specialty retailers can not only compete with national chains, but also provide a more personalized and enjoyable customer experience. Unfortunately, the restructuring of the roads and attendant re-routing of traffic flow surrounding the location have deterred visitors and made it impossible for the company to operate the store to expectation.
Martin Mayorga, president of Mayorga Coffee, explained, “We have been a proud member of the South Silver Spring business community since 2003 and are grateful to the many members of the community who have supported us from the beginning.” Mr. Mayorga continued: “While we love this location and know what it has meant to our company and the community, we cannot continue to ignore business reality. Sustainability is such a vital part of everything we do, but the ultimate sustainability is being able to thrive and succeed as a business so that we can continue to provide opportunities for our employees and be a productive member of the community in which we operate. Sadly, that is no longer a reality for that location.”
Since the restructuring of Blair Mill Road, revenues at Mayorga Coffee Factory in Silver Spring immediately dropped more than 50% and have never come back to the pre-construction levels. In contrast, even during the current economic climate, Mayorga has experienced year-over-year growth in sales at its other retail locations and triple-digit growth in its nationwide wholesale coffee business. Based on the success of the other retail locations, exponential growth of the wholesale business, and growing demand for Mayorga Coffee locations, Mayorga Coffee is planning to open additional retail locations while continuing its nationwide wholesale expansion.
Mr. Mayorga concluded: “We hope that new development throughout Silver Spring brings exciting new retail options that can serve this vibrant community and succeed within the redefined logistics of South Silver Spring.”
The Mayorga Coffee Factory in Silver Spring will operate during its regular hours until December 14. Thereafter, it will operate from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
