How Mayorga Operates Differently: A Better Way to Do Coffee

The coffee industry is full of noise, buzzwords, gimmicks, insane marketing claims, and fads. Unfortunately, behind the scenes, most coffee companies operate within the same old system—one built to benefit exporters, importers, brokers, roasters, retailers and investors. Not the farmers growing the coffee or the consumers drinking it.

I started Mayorga Coffee because I was born and raised in Latin America (Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Peru) and saw how this system was designed to take advantage of farming communities only to then mislead consumers. Over the years, we’ve built a company that does things differently, not as a marketing tactic, but because it’s the only way I believe business should be done. Most importantly, as my own way of using my privilege of coming to the US for a greater good that supports people from Latin America. Some examples of how Mayorga is different that I’ll be writing articles about:

  • We don’t have outside investors
  • We willingly operate at margins that are 30-50% below industry average
  • We don’t buy from brokers
  • We've been working directly with producers for 25 years
  • We don’t have salespeople
  • We focus on specialty coffee that can be enjoyed by and be accessible to the average coffee lover
  • We've been leading regenerative organic practices for almost 15 years
  • We don’t work with brokers or distributors for market penetration
  • We don’t waste money on trade shows

By rejecting the traditional coffee industry model, we’re able to pay farmers better prices for large volumes while we offer customers access to specialty organic coffee at prices that show respect for their hard-earned money.

I’ll be writing a series of articles where I’ll break down exactly how and why we operate differently. Each week, I’ll highlight a specific aspect of our business that sets us apart as a means of celebrating and highlighting what I believe is part of how we can change communities and industries through conscientious business practices that lead with purpose.

I do want to make it clear that I also believe that there are other ways to make a positive impact through coffee.  My celebration of what Mayorga does is not a criticism of others who don’t do exactly the same. There are (in my opinion only a handful) of coffee companies who are doing their best in their own way and I hope that more emerge soon. That being said, I’m not here to appease the coffee industry and I’m sure I’ll get plenty of pushback from people afraid that their big, fat margins are being threatened.  No me importa :)

I’m here to push boundaries, challenge the status quo, and prove that coffee can be done better—for farmers and their communities as well as for consumers.

Stay tuned and feel free to email me at Martin@MayorgaCoffee.com f you'd like me to discuss anything not listed here.
