About Dark Roast Coffee

Dark roast coffee is coffee that has been roasted for the longest amount of time compared to light roast coffee and medium roast coffee. This results in a darker bean color that can range from dark brown to nearly black. The longer roasting time causes the natural oils of the coffee to surface, resulting in beans that are shiny. It has lower perceived acidity and a smooth finish.

Flavor Profile and Tasting Notes of Dark Roast Coffee

Dark roast coffee is known for its full body and bold flavors. While origin influences some aspects of the coffee’s composition and character, roasting plays the dominant role. Common tasting notes and characteristics for dark roasts include:

  • Chocolate
  • Caramel or molasses
  • Toasted nuts
  • Smoky or roasted notes
  • Lower acidity
  • Full, rich body
  • Smooth finish

During the longer roasting, natural sugars caramelize, and deeper flavors develop, making it a great choice for those looking for a bold, full-bodied cup.

How to Choose the Best Dark Roast Coffee

When choosing the best whole bean dark roast coffee, it’s important to consider:

  • Flavor: Dark roasts are known for their bold flavor and full body, but some dark roasts are just past medium roast, while others are significantly darker.
  • Origin: Roast time plays a major role in the final flavor, but the coffee’s origin also influences the natural flavors. Factors like soil and altitude can shape the natural characteristics of the coffee.
  • Processes: Natural and honey-washed coffees tend to have a heavier body and are sweeter, while washed coffees are cleaner and smoother. At Mayorga, all of our coffees are washed.
