About Light Roast Coffee

Light roast coffee is coffee that has been roasted for the least amount of time compared to its counterparts, medium roast and dark roast coffee, resulting in a light brown color. Light roasted coffee is known to be higher in perceived acidity and a light body, so you will be able to fully experience the coffee’s tasting notes and unique characteristics. It is mostly known for its fruity, floral, and bright flavors.

Flavor Profile

Light roast coffees are roasted lightly enough to allow you to truly enjoy the original, complex flavor based on its origin. Anything from the soil to the elevation contributes to tasting notes and characteristics, such as:

  • Floral
  • Citrus
  • Bright and refreshing
  • Fruity and delicate
  • Higher acidity

Because a light roast is roasted for less time, we are able to preserve its natural sugars and aromatic compounds, which makes a light roast a perfect choice for those looking for a bright, expressive, and complex cup.

Best Brewing Methods for Light Roast Coffee

Light roast coffee can be brewed using any method, but since these beans are denser compared to other roasts, you’ll need to make some changes to your preferred brewing method.

Light roasts are roasted for less time, making the beans less porous. As a result, you’ll need to use hotter water and a finer grind size when brewing. Additionally, it’s recommended that you extend the extraction time to allow your coffee to steep for longer. All of this will help bring out the unique and complex flavors of your light roast.

The best methods for brewing a light roast are:

  • Traditional drip
  • Pour-overs
  • French press
  • Espresso.

How to Choose the Best Light Roast Coffee

Light roast refers to how the coffee is roasted. However, the flavors can vary depending on the coffee’s origin and how it’s processed. While most light roasts share the same light-bodied and bright finish, they don’t all taste the same.

When choosing the best light roast, take this into consideration:

  • Flavor: Some coffees may lean towards citrus, while others may lean towards fruity or floral notes. If you’re looking for a crisp cup, go for something with floral or citrus notes, such as our Buenos Dias, which features bright passionfruit. If you lean towards sweeter, we recommend fruit-forward light roasts.
  • Single Origin vs Blends: Single-origin coffees are often more complex and expressive of one origin’s characteristics. Blends are crafted by us, using a mix of different single origins to create a unique, balanced, and approachable cup.
  • Processes: There are various ways to process coffee once it has been picked. Natural or Honey washed coffees offer a fuller body with fruiter finishes, compared to washed coffees, which result in a cleaner, delicate cup. At Mayorga, all of our coffees are washed.

Why Mayorga’s Light Roast Coffee Stands Out

Mayorga’s light roasts start with 100% certified organic Arabica beans sourced from our long-term partners in Latin America. All of our coffee is shade-grown using regenerative farming practices that protect the land and the farming communities. We don’t use any harmful chemicals, which means safer growing conditions for farmers while also ensuring there are no harmful chemicals in your mug.

We maintain long term relationships with our producers and source our coffee directly from them without any middlemen for full traceability. Our coffee is third-party lab tested for mold and mycotoxins to give you the cleanest cup.

All of our coffee is roasted based on demand to give you fresher, better tasting coffee. We roast in small batches using our signature Latin slow-roasting technique. This allows each blend to develop flavor gradually while letting the coffee’s natural character to shine through. All of this comes together to create light roasts that are vibrant and balanced with nuanced flavor unique to their origins.

Questions

How should I store light roast coffee beans?*

As for all coffees, we recommend you store your beans: Away from heat and direct sunlight Free of excess moisture Stored in an airtight container or bag Freezing coffee is a personal preference for long-term storage, but not required

Do light roast coffees have more antioxidants?

Light roast coffees typically contain the highest antioxidant levels. A shorter roasting time allows the most preservation of the chlorogenic acids, along with the coffee cherry’s natural compounds.
