Introduction to Colombian Coffee
Colombia is one of the top coffee suppliers to the U.S., and one of the top two exporters besides Brazil. Colombian coffee is known for its smooth, balanced profile and extremely rich, volcanic soils, which create an excellent base for coffee growth.
What makes Colombian Coffee Special?
With the perfect mix of high elevation, rich volcanic soils, and consistent rainfall, Colombian coffee grows at a natural, slow rate. This allows the coffee to grow more slowly, denser, and develop those unique, complex flavor profiles. A few cool facts about Colombian coffee
- 100% Arabica: Colombia primarily produces Arabica coffee, which is typically considered to be of higher quality and complexities
- Consistent Harvest: Coffee is typically harvested once a year, depending on the region. However, since Colombia has a diverse microclimate, they are able to harvest multiple times a year, allowing the farmers to continuously export freshly harvested coffee throughout the year.
Flavor Profile and Tasting Notes of Colombian Coffee
Colombian coffee is popular for being balanced yet complex and approachable for beginners. You can get a variety of tasting notes depending on the region, elevation, and soil. With Colombian coffee, you can expect:
- Profile: smooth, versatile, and balanced
- Tasting notes: Chocolate, caramel, red fruits, citrus, and honey
- Body: Silky, medium-bodied, or light-bodied
- Process: Primarily washed. Sometimes honey is processed or processed naturally
Sourcing and Origins of Colombian Coffee
80% of coffee from Colombia actually comes from small, independent farmers. The primary sourcing regions are:
- Huila
- Nariño
- Cauca
- Antioquia
We source our coffee from a family farm, Finca Santa Maria, in the Santander Department of Colombia, which lies along the Andes region. The farm benefits from a unique microclimate shaped by the nearby Chicamocha Canyon, resulting in distinctive rainfall patterns and ideal growing conditions.
Why choose our Colombian coffee
We intentionally establish and maintain long standing relationships with all of our coffee producers. We have partnered with Finca Santa Maria for over 10 years.
All of our coffees are 100% USDA certified organic, specialty grade, and sustainably grown. We make sure that all of our coffee bags are traceable back to the exact farm and lot. One of the main reasons we started Mayorga, was to also make sure we pay our farmers a fair price. By working directly, we eliminate the middleman and instead use that to support our partners.
Finca Santa Maria is led by Mildred Munoz, who gathered 42 women from the Aratoca community to start this COOP. Their working model encompasses empowerment, shared opportunity, and hands-on regenerative farming by using bio-prodcuts to nurture their soil.
