The Napkin

Where Mayorga began

The Napkin

Nearly 30 years ago, Martin Mayorga sat down with a family friend and coffee farmer in Nicaragua who was ready to walk away from coffee. A conversation and a sketch on a napkin that day would become the beginning of Mayorga.

Where it starts

The Other Side of Coffee

Born in Guatemala, Martin grew up in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Peru before moving to the U.S. with his family. Living between these places exposed him to two different sides of the products people consume every day.

When he returned to Nicaragua at 18, that contrast became especially clear through coffee. Coffee was romanticized as something exotic and special in the U.S., while the communities growing it faced poverty and a lack of opportunity.

The Turning Point

The Conversation That Changed Everything

While in Nicaragua, Martin reconnected with an old friend of his father's who he'd grown up calling his uncle. Despite having a large, productive coffee farm, he wasn't making enough money to keep it.

Martin couldn't understand why, so his uncle drew the coffee supply chain on a napkin, showing exactly what stood between his farm and the people buying his coffee.

The Conversation That Changed Everything

The Problem

Without direct access to buyers, producers lose more of their potential profit with every additional step in the supply chain.

A Different Possibility

Martin saw a more direct way: connect producers with buyers, reduce unnecessary layers, and help more of the coffee's value stay with the people growing it.

Accidentally Building a Coffee Company

“I got into this to help a family member, to learn, to make a difference in Latin America, and to represent the culture and the communities. I never thought, ‘I’m going to get into the coffee business.’

If I wanted to make an impact, I knew I had to understand the product and the supply chain behind it.”
